Improving coastal ecosystem management for the economic security of the most vulnerable communities in the face of climate change
THE PROJECT
The marine ecosystems and estuaries of Colombia play an important role in the food security and economic prosperity of coastal communities, many of which are affected by coastal development and climate change, as well as political instability. The Colombian government allows the use of marine resources to strengthen local economies. With the aim of achieving sustainable development and the wellbeing of local communities, it is crucial we ensure communities have the knowledge and resources to do so.
This project focuses on coastal biodiversity, the ecosystem services they provide, and natural resource management. We will develop a research-based programme that incorporates training and management. The research will promote international collaboration between academic and administrative entities and local communities, in order to develop solutions that take into account local needs and practices. The training will promote sustainable management of coastal resources for the economic well-being of vulnerable local communities.
